New Leadership was created through a unique partnership between the Urban League of Springfield, Inc. and the Massachusetts Army National Guard. In 1998, the Massachusetts Board of Education, with the endorsement of the Springfield School Committee and the Springfield Education Association, established New Leadership as a Horace Mann Charter School. As such, it is a Springfield Public School managed by an independent board of trustees and has the latitude to develop innovative education-based programs.
New Leadership Charter School is a public charter school located in Springfield, Massachusetts. We currently serve 460 students in grades 6 - 12. New Leadership students excel through the combination of a rigorous academic program with leadership training and character development. Here, students learn to be leaders and good citizens ready to contribute their talents to a changing world.
New Leadership is a college preparatory program with a special emphasis on academic achievement, character development, leadership development, and community service. We believe that all students can attain and demonstrate high levels of personal leadership, as evidenced in their vision of self and others, integrity of values, and compassion toward oneself and others.
In addition to a rigorous academic program that requires an extended school day, a longer school year and Saturday morning classes, New Leadership students participate in regularly occurring leadership training activities.
